The State Games of America is the premier national multi-sport event for athletes of all ages and abilities held every biennium under the banner of the National Congress of State Games. Medal winners from 36 State Games nationwide earn the right to compete against other winners and match their skills and competitive desire in a national arena.
The 2009 edition marked the third time the Colorado Springs hosted this national event having previously hosted it 2005 and 2007, both with record numbers. Other host cities have included Hartford, Connecticut and St. Louis, Missouri.

The State Games concept was developed in New York in 1978 with the Empire State Games. Annually, more than 400,000 athletes compete in State Games nationwide.
State Games feature various sports from the Olympic and Pan American Games programs as well as sports with regional popularity in each state.
Organized and managed by the California State Games, the 2011 State Games of America will take place August 4-7, 2011 in San Diego, CA.
